Bass Performance Hall Gets a Makeover from APEX
The Situation
Bass Performance Hall is often called the crown jewel of downtown Fort Worth. Owned and operated by Performing Arts Fort Worth, the 2,042-seat venue is home to the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, the Fort Worth Opera, the Texas Ballet Theater, and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and hosts national touring artists and Broadway productions. Its two 48-foot-tall angels play their golden trumpets as they emerge from the grand facade, welcoming arts and culture enthusiasts to the 25-year-old building.
But even angels aren’t immune to the dirt and grime of city life.
In early 2022, Dwayne Tidwell, director of building services for Performing Arts Fort Worth, decided it was time to give the angels and surrounding exterior structure a bath. The building hadn’t been power washed in about six years, and the Texas limestone was beginning to look a little worse for wear. Unfortunately, what he thought was going to be a simple project soon became complicated.
“The contractor I normally used seemed to be too busy to get to us,” Tidwell said. “I needed to find someone else.”
The Solution
Tidwell had attended a number of events hosted by the Building Owners and Managers Association of Fort Worth (BOMA Fort Worth), where he’d met Christy Earley, account executive with APEX Surface Care. After a quick search of the APEX website verified that the company offered exterior power washing among its many surface care services, Tidwell gave Earley a call.
“Christy came right out with some of her field technicians to assess the situation and send a proposal,” he said.
Tidwell was pleased with the bid and quickly scheduled the work with APEX. He noted that even before the project began, communication from the APEX team was excellent.
“Christy called a couple of days beforehand to remind me they were coming out and to make sure the dates still worked,” he said.
The Result
APEX completed the work over the course of five days in April. Team members had to use a lift to wash the highest areas of the building, which were about 100 feet off the ground. Because the sidewalk in front of the building had to be closed during the project, the team worked quickly to ensure pedestrians weren’t inconvenienced for too long.
While the proposal only included power washing the north side of the building, including the two angels, the APEX team cleaned a little beyond the requested space to ensure the difference between the newly washed side and the rest of the building wasn’t too obvious. The team also removed some microbial growth while ensuring the integrity of the limestone wasn’t damaged.
“The APEX team was knowledgeable and communicated very well. They were helpful throughout the process,” Tidwell said. “Christy came out every day to check on the progress as well.”
Tidwell hopes to hire APEX to power wash the exterior of the building on an annual basis. He also is open to partnering with the company on other projects.
“The management of a project is as important to me as the quality of the work,” Tidwell said. “Leadership and communication are critical, and APEX excelled in those areas.”
